The DSM-5 lists the criteria for Panic Disorder as the presence of reoccurring and unexpected panic attacks, with persistent fear that panic attacks will happen. A panic attack is characterized by at least four of the following:
In response to this intense fear, those of us with Panic Disorder will often change our behavior to avoid the possibility of panic attacks. Because panic attacks in Panic Disorder are unexpected – as in, we don’t know when panic will attack us – we don’t know what we need to avoid in order to avoid a panic attack. Our avoidance starts to make life pretty small.
Panic Disorder often arises with Agoraphobia.
