SOCIAL ANXIETY
DISORDER

TREATMENT CAN HELP.

The treatment for Social Anxiety Disorder involves exposure to the thing we fear (and yearn for) the most – social connection and intimacy.  WCA will help you craft a series of learning opportunities where you can practice being afraid and move toward connection.

FEAR TARGETS THE THING WE VALUE MOST.

Social Anxiety Disorder (or Social Phobia) is a common mental health disorder and impacts 7% of the American adult population.

Social Anxiety Disorder is characterized by an intense fear of judgment that often arises in social situations or when exposed to the possible scrutiny of others. This fear is just about always present in these situations, and often comes with symptoms of panic, like sweating, shaking, increased heart rate, flushing, and we often fear that others will notice our anxiety symptoms (this belief often exacerbates the panic) – these fears have been with us for a minimum of 6 months, and many of us with Social Anxiety DIsorder experienced our first symptoms as teens.

Those of us with Social Anxiety Disorder often avoid social situations (or endure them – begrudgingly – with intense fear), and isolation, loneliness, and other co-morbidities are a common a byproduct of our avoidance. If yoou have Social Anxiety Disorder, avoidance of fear may be one of the leading factors that prevents you from getting help.
